|Community Development Employment Program|
Buyinbin delivers the CDEP program only in 3 communities Baryulgil,Malabulgilmah and Muli Muli. We have a commitment from government that CDEP will remain in these communities for 3 years until June 2012. A 3 year time frame will give us the opportunity to work with and support the communities by working with the participants and organisations that are either in or associated with the communities to develop a Community Action Plan.
We see that by working closely with communites we can support them in a much stronger way then we were previously able to, now that we have a reasonable timeframe and not the one year funding as has been the case in the past.
CDEP provides community managed activities that develop participant’s skills and employability in order to assist their move into employment outside CDEP. These activities are of great value to the communities and can lead to the development of business enterprise.
CDEP commenced as a pilot scheme in 1977 and at its peak delivered services to 35, 000 participants through 260 providers in hundreds of communities throughout Australia.
In 2008-09 the Australian Government commenced work to reform CDEP, this led to the closure of most CDEP nationally leaving only a small number of CDEP available in remote locations and only 4 providers in NSW.
Currently Buyinbin has projects at all sites developing and re-establishing community centres that will benefit the whole community while participants receive accredited training in partnership with North Coast Institute of TAFE and Buyinbin Community College.
Other participants have work experience agreements with local employers in which they work for these employers and Buyinbin pays all wages and insurances for two days per week, with many of the these arrangements including on the job training and leading to meaningful employment with local employers.
What's happening in our CDEP communities?
We are currently working with North Coast TAFE to deliver units from the Certificate I in Construction.
